things to do in troncones

This was our second time staying at Casas Gregorio on Troncones beach in Zihuatanejo – two luxuriously simple beach front houses where you can make dinner looking at the sea. Despite weird natural phenomenon like a lunar eclipse and a 7.5 earthquake, it was as lovely as ever, maybe even more so for the tinge of the extraordinary.

Troncones is a sleepy beach town on the Pacific coast with two general stores “downtown,” a couple of surf shops, a yoga retreat and a handful of restaurants were you can get a mean coconut shrimp. It’s also one of the closest beaches to Mexico City and you can catch the overnight bus and wake up to the ocean breeze by 6am. Here is a mini guide to what to do in Troncones and some places we have become fond of after four trips here in the past four years.

I have been living in and writing about Mexico for 15 years and Mexico City for almost 10 of those. My writing focuses on food, history, local culture, and all the amazing stories that this place has to tell. I also give food and history tours in the city and am the author of the book "Mexico City Streets: La Roma" about Colonia Roma, the neighborhood where I live.
